CHAPTER SEVEN
“GOT YOUR COFFEE, I see.”
It was two weeks later, and Abby and Hunter were having their regular video chat. Originally, when they’d said their uncomfortable goodbyes, Hunter said he would check in “once or twice” to see if she needed anything. Once or twice, it turned out, meant daily. In a way, talking regularly was a good thing. It helped them get over the awkward hump left behind after their kiss.
You mean after you threw yourself at him.
It probably also helped that they’d come to some silent, mutual decision to pretend the kiss had never happened. If Abby every once in a while felt a flash of heat when cleaning Hunter’s bedroom, or experienced a passing, random memory of how good his lips felt...well, she quickly shoved the thoughts aside. No point dwelling on the embarrassing. Even if it was the best kiss she’d ever experienced.
Despite her resolve, however, there was one nagging thought she couldn’t shake: for a brief moment, Hunter had kissed her back. More than kissed. Kissed.
Originally, after the disaster in the wine bar, she’d briefly considered quitting. In fact, she’d rehearsed her speech on the trip back from the bar. Nothing else to do, since neither of them were talking to each other. Before she could say a word, however, Hunter had surprised her by shoving his door key in her hand.
“You still want me?” Abby had immediately asked. “I mean, as a housekeeper?”
“I promised you temporary work until you got back on your feet. I see no reason why I shouldn’t keep that promise. Do you?”
Actually, Abby could have given several, but in the end, he was leaving town and she needed money, so she stayed quiet.
Which was why she now sat in front of a computer monitor with a coffee mug cradled between her hands, while across the ocean Hunter did the same with a glass of beer.
“Don’t know why you’re so surprised,” she said, when they were finishing up their morning chat. “These calls of yours are the perfect excuse for a coffee break.” To illustrate her point, she took a large swallow, while in the back of her mind she wondered if the reason they both brought drinks was to keep their hands occupied while they talked. Empty hands led to fidgeting, and fidgeting would reveal the awkwardness they were both trying to hide.
“Did you get the package I sent you?” she asked, raising the cup to her lips again.
“Waiting downstairs when I checked out.”
“Good. I was afraid the protests would delay delivery.”
“You needn’t have been concerned,” Hunter said over his beer. Today’s selection was a dark-looking ale. “Protests are several miles away from the hotel.”
Maybe so, but Hunter had been in the middle of them. Abby hadn’t forgotten his cavalier attitude toward his personal safety. He might not care what happened to himself, but someone should. For now, the task fell to her. She owed him. After all, he did step in to help her. She’d spent the week scanning the internet and news reports to keep abreast of the action.
